Have you read 50 books ?? Jiltrice has ! In Arohanui, the students are working hard to complete 50 books. Tino pai Jiltrice. You are amazing! Who is next ?
The senior students from the Rangimarie have been coming to help the Arohanui students with their reading. We are lucky to have the intermediate girls helping us here in Arohanui. We are playing literacy games, reading to our buddies, listening to our buddies read to us, playing blend bingo, working on rhyming words, word sounds and so on.
Room 2 has been working really hard to up our reading mileage. In order to get better at reading you have to read – that’s the only way! So Room 2 has been reading and reading and reading some more. Reading to someone else is invaluable. We can listen to someone else, we can help them when they get stuck, we can look at the pictures together, we can make meaning from what is heard and what is said. Reading together is great!
These 10 Arohanui students have read FIFTY books this term!!! WOW !!! Way to go !
Here is a video of Felix reading his book beautifully to the teacher. He is using great expression. The book sounds like one he loves to read! You can see he can read left to right; he also knows how to point to the words and read them one by one.
If you listen carefully you can hear him self-correct. This means he hears that what he says does not match with the way the word looks, so he reads a word again. These are all very good early concepts about print. Felix has only been at school only four weeks!!! Well done Felix, keep on reading, reading, reading!!
Yesterday was Catholic Schools Day. As part of our celebrations we went to visit our Buddy Syndicate the Rangimarie Syndicate. The students are all Year 7 and Year 8 girls.
We went outside to find a good place to read and talk together. Some of us sat on the deck, some sat on the seats, some stayed inside!
We were reading our readers, reading our scrapbooks and looking at our word and abc charts too! Our buddies helped and supported us.
After we did a lot of reading together – then we talked about two special things.
We shared ideas with our senior buddies and they wrote our ideas down for us!
It was good team work!
We looked around the Rangimarie learning area. It is an innovative learning space like our area is too.
We ended our time by going into the playground together. The senior students kept an eye on us and helped us to use the equipment correctly. We had a great time – thank you Rangimarie students and teachers.
On Friday afternoon we went to the school library for our timetabled session. We love to go to the library.
It was just before home time so we took our bags and hats over. We placed them tidily outside the library door.
It is fun to choose books from the shelves, book cases and browse boxes. We use our browse cards to remember where we got the book from.
The teachers read to us, sometimes a whole book – and sometimes part of a book to promote it. Our teachers love to read. And so do we!
