Over the whole of this week Liana-Quinn’s Mum Magdalene and her friends are coming to show us how to design and tie dye a personalised lavalava.
Magdalene has got each of us a clean used pillow slip. They are very white and will dye well.
First we slide cardboard into the centre of the pillow slip so the glue doesn’t drip through. Then we decide on the patterns we would like on our lavalava. We use the stencils if we like. There are different shapes like hearts, stars and butterflies. Most of us put our names on too. We use the small squeeze bottles Mrs de Koning bought us. We put the glue onto the cloth very carefully. This will dry and resist the dye. After it is dyed we put them through a very hot wash and the the glue comes off the fabric and we can see the areas we covered as white lines and shapes!! We are only at the PVA patterning stage so far. We work in groups of 6 at a time.
Keep watching this space to see how it all goes!!
