On 1st July Rooms 2 and 2a went for a walk to the Dental Clinic on Puhinui Road. It is down a right of way next to Puhinui School. The Dental Clinic is a lovely new building. Some of us had been there before to get our teeth checked by the Dental Therapists. They welcomed us to the clinic.
After saying hello we walked quietly down the corridor to look in the different rooms on the way. There are a lot of special rooms in the Dental Clinic.
An examination room
The big blue chair
Soft and easy to sit on
A work bench
We sat and listened as the dental Therapist explained the equipment in the room. All of the furniture and equipment have special jobs to do. Then we watched as one of the Dental Therapists tools us how to brush our teeth properly. Flick, flick, flick!
I can do that!
This is interesting….
That’s just what I do at home!
Then open your mouth
Make sure you brush the top teeth
Make sure your tooth brush is not old and scruffy
Take time and brush your teeth carefully
First the front teeth
Michael was chosen to dress up like a Dental Therapist. Look at the clothes and accessories he wore.
Now Michael the therapist will stay clean and healthy
On goes the face mask to protect the Dental Therapist
Oh, Michael has it on successfully!
The Therapist shows us how it goes on
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle the fingers down!
These gloves are tricky to put on
It hooks behind the ears
Put on the mask
Tied at the bask
On goes the apron
Here are the mask and gloves
Opening out the plastic apron
After that Jernee was chosen to sit in the special dental chair. She enjoyed herself and we saw how the Therapist could make the chair go up and down. It was fun, and not scary at all. Everyone who sits in the chair wears a cool pair of sunglasses. That is for two reasons! One the light does not hurt your eyes and two nothing will splash into your eyes.
Here is the little mirror with a long handle
Back goes the chair
Down goes the chair
On with the glasses
This is great
After that we had a question and answer session. We talked about healthy drinks: water and milk, and then healthy food: fruit and vegetables. We said if we had been to the Dental Clinic before. We listened carefully and put up our hands if we wanted to answer a question! We were very polite…
Here are the two sensible studetns who said “thank you” to the therapists
Everyone wanted to share
We were very patient
We put up our hands when we wanted to give an answer
The therapists were amazed at how much we knew about healthy teeth
The Dental Therapist asked us some questions
Then we went out into the foyer and were given some gifts. Everyone got a special sticker, a chart to tick off each time we brush our teeth. Also we got a fun colouring in sheet! We took them back to school and plan to glue them into our scrapbooks so we can take them home and share them with our families.
Everyone had a good time and learned a lot abut the inside of the Dental Clinic, the role of the Dental Therapist and how to keep our teeth clan and healthy. Soon we were walking back to school – in time for lunch…..some of us walking slowly and feeling a bit tired.
