Making butter as Mary Did!

7 June 2016 · by Mrs de Koning

We have been studying ‘Jesus My Friend’ in RE over the first part of the term. We have looked at the food Jesus ate. We learned that butter can be made from the cream which is separated from the milk. As cream is full of fat, it it lighter than the milk and it rises to the top of the container. Mary would leave the milk from the goat in a cool place to settle ans separate. Then she would scoop off the rich yellowy cream from the top.

Mrs O’Grady bought our cream from the shops. It is from cows milk, not goats milk. We put it into a jar with a marble and shook and shook it until suddenly……

We liked singing the Making Food Song as we shook the jar. It seemed to be taking a long time. We all had a go!

It was fun singing and shaking. We were very sensible. We may be able to do this at home for Mum and Dad too.

We sampled the butter on flat bread with honey as Jesus may have!

We did lots of talking and really enjoyed having taste testing..

Thank you to Mrs O’Grady for the cream and Mrs B for the honey…….
