Visiting the Papatoetoe Teaching Gardens

29 August 2018 · by Mrs de Koning

What a lovely day we had Week 6 walking to the Papatoetoe Teaching gardens.

First we saw how to make a delicious omelette using fresh eggs and vegetables straight from the garden. we especially loved seeing the spiraliser which cut the courgette into long spirals like noodles!

Then we planted some bean seeds!

We learned about different types of gardening tools too!

Garden Walk

29 August 2018 · by Mrs de Koning

During Week 5 Harinui Syndicate went for a neighbourhood garden walk. We looked at all the flowers and plants. We saw signs of spring. This was part of our Social Science Unit on Stewardship – taking care of God’s world and using the resources from it in the best way possible.

We enjoyed our time looking at the types of containers we could put plants in to grow them.

Our Pet Interview

1 March 2018 · by Mrs de Koning

On Wednesday we went to interview two of our senior girls about their pets. we had a list of questions we had thought of. Mrs de Koning wrote them down for us.

Two more senior students helped us read out our questions. We listened carefully to the answers. Thank you for helping us learn all about your pets and how you take care of them!

The next day we shared with the rest of the Harinui Syndicate the things we had learned from you.

We walked one way and got a ride in the van the other way. It was quite a long walk, but everyone did very well. Once there we walked through the store looking at all the animals and displays.

We liked seeing the Dog Wash Area.

We enjoyed looking at the playful cats in their cages. We saw that they were well looked after. They had food, water, toys and a comfortable warm place to sleep!

We looked at the green parrot and he looked at us from his cage. We peeped at a rabbit in his home too. There were lots of fun pet houses, kennels and cages too!

We felt how soft the pet beds were and looked at the animal scales. There you can see how much your pet weights. We stood on the scales ot see how heavy we were! Then we walked to look at some pet toys.

We checked out the red eared turtle trying to climb onto a rock. Then we looked at all the fish swimming in the tanks. We saw they had clean water and stones on the bottom of the tanks.

We saw that the fish were many different colours and also there were lots of types of water weeds you could buy to decorate your fish tank. The fish like ot swim in and around the weeds and also nibble on them too.

Next we sat near the fish tanks and sketched them. We made a fishy shape and made sure we gave it eyes, a mouth, fins and a tail, and also some scales. We had to look very closely and did our best.

1 March 2018 · by Mrs de Koning

For two weeks the Harinui Syndicate have achieved the Missions Award. Thanks to the students and their families who are enabling them to regularly give a donation to go in our mission tin. The school sends the money raised to special projects. At the moment the money is expected to go to Catholic Schools in Tonga and Samoa who have been effected by the recent cyclones.

Daily 5

1 March 2018 · by Mrs de Koning

At school we are learning about Daily 5 Reading.

One of our activities is Read to Self. Another is Read to Other. When we read to our buddy we sit side by side, EEKK (elbow ot elbow and knee to knee.

We love to read to each other, sharing our books and helping our friends.

We are learning to enjoy reading and be independent readers. We are building our reading stamina so we can read for longer. It is good to read at school and at home too.
