This week is national Samoan Language Week and Room 2 has been busy learning about the language and culture of Samoa. A quarter of our class identifies as Samoan and it’s awesome to get to connect with some of the cultures in our classroom.
We made tapa patterns in art. First we looked at typical patterns in Samoan tapa designs. We noticed that there were lots of flowers in Samoan art and repeating patterns. We studied what other artists had made, we used thick and thin markers to create thick and thin black lines, then we used white pastels to highlight parts of our design. Then we dyed the paper brown.
Finally we used bleach to put on our final touches. Bleach is tricky you can’t get it on yourself or your clothes. Miss Skipper has mounted our art now and we think it looks good!
