It was a long bus ride to the farm but we soon got there. If you are wondering why we had to go to the farm, well it is because we were going to a cross country competition. I was so nervous because we had to run 2,000 metres. At first I didn’t realise that it was much, but then we took a look at the track and saw that it was longer than two streets. Luckily I had my best friend Merryn with me.
I would of been bored to death without her there to keep me company. Anyway, first the 9 year old boys ran, then it was the 9 year old girls. After that it was the 10 year old boys……..and then US!!!!!!! I was so scared. I thought I was going to throw up. I felt like there was a race between all those butterflies in my stomach. They must of been going super fast. We went to the start of the line. There was a man there to start us off.
“Three, two, one, GO!!!!!” he yelled out. I tried to go at least 70 percent at the start and then work my way up so that I wasn’t so tired near the end. Suddenly a girl tripped over on some rocks. Her legs banged onto them. I looked back and went to help her. I was quite scared because she said that she couldn’t breath. I then figured that it might been because of the shock and the pain bursting through her body. I was looking around for anyone that could help. Finally some adults came to take over.
I was at the very back now. I wasn’t very happy at all, but at the same time I was glad I had helped her. It was super hard to run because the ground was not at all smooth. There mini piles of lumpy dirt everywhere. I felt like I was going to trip over it if I started running too hard. I couldn’t keep steady, but later on I got my balance. I kept trying to pass one of the girls in front of me. I finally got past her, but then there were two other girls up ahead of me.
I decided to just go for it and try to run past them. My foot kept bending because of the super unsmooth ground. We came up to a mini trench in ground that we had to step through. It was really muddy and I saw lots of unpartnered shoes stuck in it. I was happy I hadn’t lost my shoe. I kept my pace up and finally got pass those two girls that were up ahead of me. Later on the first girl I passed caught up. We were running about the same pace. I felt my scalp burning from the sun. not literally though. I tried my hardest not to walk, but I couldn’t help it. I felt the pain and tiredness shoot through my body. I couldn’t stand the heat. My feet were also very, very hot and I just wanted to take everything off and jump into an ice cold pool. I was never the end and I was so happy that it was almost over. I had finally completed the race after about 20 minutes.
It really did feel like 20 minutes. The same man that started use of was at the end to give everyone a high five. I think I was more exhausted than I have, and will ever be. Unfortunately it wasn’t any colder and the sun kept pouring down on me. It was like it was shaming me for coming 54th!!!!!!!! The only thing that mattered to me though…….was the fact that it was over.
I didn’t have to do anymore races. I plonked down on the tarpaulin with Merryn and we both shared some lemonade. I read a bit and Merryn and I talked a lot. Later on it was time to go back to school. Merryn and I both picked a daisy each from the farm and wore it in our hair to look like twins!!! We didn’t really look like twins though. We also wanted to remember this day. This horrible, humid, burning, tiring day.
FINALY………
THE END
