The Maori New Year or Matariki is a time of year where we remember our loved ones who have past before us. It’s also a time to take stock after the harvest has been collected. It is a time for whanau and a time for learning.
We’ve been connecting our theme of Food for Growth with one of the themes of Matariki. Traditionally during Matariki, the Maori pataka or storage huts would have been filled with various food items notably kumara.
We’ve also been reading some of the Maori myths which would have been told around this time of year and we’ve made some stars to represent the stars of Matariki.
