During Week 4 of Term 4 we realised that our sweet pea plants form Little Gardener were getting too big for their pots. We needed to plant them out into the Room 3 garden! So Mrs de Koning brought 5 long bamboo stakes to school to make a teepee with.
Mrs de Koning showed us how to make the teepee. She pushed the 5 stakes into the soil, in a circular shape. Then she tied the tops together with string. Each person had a turn to plant one of the small seed pots into the soil. We planted them close to the bamboo stake so they can grow around them.
We used the small trowel to dig a hole in the soil. then we put the pot into the soil and covered it gently with more soil.
We had to be very gentle with the plant and hold it up the right way. We looked at the tiny tendrils growing from the stalk. They will twine around the bamboo stake so it can grow up towards the sun.
We hope that the sweet pea plants grow tall and strong. we will have to take care of them and water them every day if it does not rain.
We like being gardeners. we are taking care of the earth like Duffy asked us to do during his show.
When the plants get big and tall they should get sweet smelling flowers on them. That is why the plants are called sweet peas!!
Some children filled our watering cans and began to water the little plants. They tried to water the soil near the plants and not the leaves. We do not want our plants to get mildew on the leaves.
