After we had read our Dual Language Reader we wanted to see how to make the chop suey that was mentioned in the book.
Mrs B brought all the ingredients for the dish, and Mrs de Koning brought her fry pan, big pot and big wooden spoon along.
We went into the Technology Room to see how it was made. Our tables were in a U shape with chairs around it so we could all see. We had three visiting children and their Mum’s along too.
We looked at all the equipment and the ingredients. What were the different items for? How did we use them? Mrs B first put the rice into a bowl with water and put it into the microwave to cook.
Mrs B chopped up the onions and put them into the fry pan with some oil. Then in went a spoonful of garlic. They were stirred aeound until they were golden brown.
We looked and listened carefully. We checked on the rice through the microwave door. We saw the onions bubbling in the oil They smelled delicious as they cooked.
Mrs B sliced the meat into thin slices and it was added to the pan. It sizzled and popped as it cooked. The meat changed colour from red to brown. We put the vermicelli noodles into a pot of boiling water which we got from the electric jug.
Mrs B is a very good cook, and very quick. We watched carefully! Mrs de Koning also paid close attention as sne wants to make the chop suey at home for her family.
After the soya sauce went into the noodles Mrs B added the meat, onion and garlic, and the vegetables. The vegetables make the dish very healthy. We all walked past to have a close look at the pot full of Chop Suey as Mrs B held the pot.
Next we all had the opportunity to try some of the chop suey. We had a bowl of it with rice and ate it with a spoon. We enjoyed eating it! Some people had never tried chop suey before! Thank you Mrs Bucheler – you are a fantastic cook!
