Today the students of Harinui Syndicate had fun making butter. We learned that Jesus and his family would have made butter from cream. Perhaps it was from goat or sheep milk – not cow’s milk as we have done!
We looked at the thick white cream. We put it into a screw top jar with a couple of clean beads. We put the lid on firmly. What did we do next? Yes, we shook and shook!
It took a long time – shake, shake, shake. Half way through Mrs B put another bead into the jar. Now there were two rolling around moving the cream. After a while the cream got thick and yellow. Inside the jar we saw the butter forming. Around the butter was the thin white liquid called – ‘buttermilk’ which is good to make scones with!
After the butter was made, Mrs B took it our and put it onto a clean cloth. She squeezed out the extra buttermilk, so there was a big blob of butter! Next she spread a little butter onto each piece of pita bread.
We were lucky enough to get to taste our butter. It was smooth and tasty. It was golden and shiny. It was delicious!! We enjoyed the piece of fresh pita bread too.
