On Thursday 3rd November the Harinui Syndicate walked together in convoy to Old Papatoetoe. We looked firstly at our own school murals and discussed their origins and meaning. Then we went through Papatoetoe looking at the various murals that showed the heritage and history of the area. We moved around in separate groups by rotation.
We enjoyed looking at the pictures and talking about what they represented.
Also we saw the poster describing how the Papatoetoe Mall was going to be renovated. There will be new shops and storefronts. A fresh colour scheme is planned. Set into the pavement we saw some plaques which told to the historical buildings which were still present, or had been present in a particular place in Papatoetoe – they were very interesting!
Next we sat in the sunshine below the Picnic Mural and tried to sketch some of the significant events we could see happening on it – the adults having a picnic afternoon tea. The girl and her dog, the boys playing marbles and the photographer recording the event. We were very good at copying and sharing ideas about what we were recording.
We compared what we saw with the picnics our own families enjoy.
