During Week 5 we went for a visit to the ‘One Heritage’ Pasifika Art Store in St George Street Papatoetoe. We were welcomed by our hosts and had a wonderful time.
We learned that most of the crafts were Cook Island ones, but there were also some from other Pasifika countries too.
We were especially looking at the different themes and symbols used in the Pasifika art and crafts. We saw flowers, butterfies, crosses, leaves, wreathes and some geometric patterns too!
They showed how important the beautiful plants and animals of the islands are to the people who come form there.
We were very impressed with how many things come from the coconut tree and coconuts. Creams, oils, clothes and decorations, musical instruments and brooms – what a long list….and there are probably more!
We saw lots of ideas we wanted to try to copy and use for inspiration for our own art when we got back to school. We admired the skill of the people who made the items in the store.
We had a lovely time at the One Heritage store. Thank you to our hosts!
