Recently Mrs O”Grady took her group of students aside for Oral Story Writing. Our focus was on Healthy Lunches. Everyone in the group collected their lunch box from their school bags. then they opened them to see what yummy healthy food their family/whanau had given them.
We looked at everything in our lunch boxes and talked about what was in there. We liked the fruit – can you see our bananas and apples? We liked the vegetable – can you see the carrots and celery?
We liked the sandwiches and talked about our favourite fillings.
We talked about which things were treats and which things we should have every day. We talked about making choices that are healthy because they are low on salt and low on fats and sugar. It is a tricky thing to know, so we rely on our family/whanau to help us with this.
After we did a lot of talking together we went into the classroom and decided on the sentences we wanted to write to make up our shared story. Mrs O’Grady wrote the story for us as we told her our ideas. We had to speak in full sentences and use some of our descriptive words to make it sound really interesting.
Afterwards we all read our story together. We often share with another group, or even the whole class to show that we can write a story together and then read it back too!
