Yesterday, Tuesday 17th May Vanzin’s Mum Yumi came to school to show us how to make Rice Balls.
We had admired Vanzin’s healthy lunch at school and asked if her Mum could come and share her knowledge with us. She did a lot of shopping and preparing for us.
We watched as Yumi showed us the ingredients and equipment she had brought along.
Next she made a rice ball and decorated it. Yumi told us what she was doing at every step. She showed us slowly and carefully. We were very interested!
She cut a square of Gladwrap. Yumi put some cooled rice in. Then she popped some tuna mix in the centre and more rice on the top. The Gladwrap was pulled together at the top and you use your hands to press together and shape the rice inside the wrap. Take it out of the wrap and decorate it.
Yumi told us how to make the tuna mix. Open the can, add some Japanese mayonnaise, and a little Japanese soy sauce. Then gently fold together. Ready to put into the centre of your Rice Balls to make a yummy surprise in the centre!
We were lucky that we all could have a turn to make a rice ball using the ingredients we liked. It was great fun. There was no mess! Yumi was a great teacher!
The people waiting for their turn waited so patiently, they offered advice and talked about what was happening.
Everyone enjoyed making their rice ball and when it was decorated they wrapped it inn Gladwrap and put it into their lunch boxes to eat later.
Mrs de Koning thought they were so great, she went home to make some for her husband and daughter for tea! They loved them too…..
Thank you Yumi for helping us!
