Yesterday, Thursday 7th April Holy Cross School had a Run-a-thon. It was to raise money for an all weather surface for us to play on all year – even when the day has been rainy and the fields are muddy!
We all took home a blue sheet to get sponsorship. Our family/whanau, friends and neighbours put their names on the paper and said how much money they would pay us every time we ran once around the field. One time around in an oval is called a lap.
We went outside and stood behind the cones to watch the Aroha Syndicate as they ran around the field, doing their laps. We clapped and cheered so they would run faster. We called out to the people in our house to encourage them to keep going.
We stood around the track in our house groups and the parents told us what was going to happen. We listened for the hooter. It was very loud!! Then we ran and ran. Every time we came back past our house tent we stopped quickly so the parent helper or senior student could mark another tally on our special sticker. We could see one more mark every time we ran another lap.
Everyone did their very best. We tried to jog so that we did not get too tired. If we were puffed we continued power walking until we were a little rested. The Harinui students wanted to get as many laps as they could so that we can raise a lot of money for the fundraiser!
When we were finished we went to the Teacher Aides so they could look at our points and record the tally. This was so we could receive our certificates at the end of the day. We need our certificates to show our sponsors so they know how much money they owe us.
Thank you Mum and Dad for helping us ask our family, friends and neighbours to sponsor us – now we have to visit them again to collect our sponsorship money and take it to school. Mr Young would like it all to be at school by this Friday 15th April. There will be some prizes for people who bring all their sponsorship money in to school by that time!
