In Harinui Syndicate, because we are new to school there is plenty of opportunities to learn through play. We all have our favourite activities to participate in. Our teachers encourage us to try out new things and work with different classmates each time.
We talk about how we behave during our developmental/play time. Things like sharing, cooperating, taking turns, helping each other and using kind words are discussed. Everyone wants to have a happy time, the students – and the teachers!
Our teachers walk around talking to us. Sometimes they work with a group encouraging them to try new things and talk about what each person is doing. We can do one thing for the whole time, or move from one activity to another. We try to remember to tidy up an activity before moving on!
When new children are going to start school they come to visit us. We try to make them welcome. We say ‘hello!’ and talk with them. They like to meet the friends they will spend time with at school. New students visit twice before they turn 5 years old. We love meeting new people!
Some of us enjoyed talking to the visiting Mums and Dads. They like to know what we were doing.
We love our new lino area where we can play inside with the play dough and the paint and not make a mess! We can also use glue and cut and paste without any worries. Our teachers like it too!
Mrs O’Grady worked with a small group on a rhyming word game. Some of us are very good at it! Knowing rhyming words really helps our reading!
Mrs Bucheler went outside with some children and they used the chalk to practise writing letters, sight words, names, and a few clever people are even writing whole sentences independently…
