On Friday 20th November, after reading us a Samoan Legend, Mrs Meredith showed us how to open a coconut. Mrs Hogan (Lily’s Mum) had brought it to school when she told us the story from Tahiti called Hina and the Coconut.
Mrs Meredith had a plastic cloth on the floor to keep it clean in case of spills. She also had a bowl, cup, and a hammer.
Mrs Meredith said that usually she would use a big knife called a ‘machete’ but Mrs de Koning did not have one at home and brought the hammer instead! All the coconut water was saved and everyone had a few drops put onto their hand to try. Some children loved it! They said, Mmmm, yum, delicious!” Other children did not like it very much.
Mrs Meredith used a knife to get the coconut meat out of the shell. She had to be careful not to cut herself. She got out lots of small pieces. Later Mrs de Koning gave each of us a small part to try. Most children loved it, so crunchy, sweet and delicious!
Thank you Mrs Meredith for coming and showing us how to open a coconut! We had a great time!
