Last week Room 2a began to learn about Legends and Tales from our many cultures. After reading the story, retelling the story and acting the story out Mrs de Koning took photos of the story sequence as Room 2a posed for ‘freeze frames.”
Maui and his brothers were angry because the sun travelled across the sky too fast. There was not enough time to do all the things they wanted to in the day. Just as they started to fish, hunt or garden……..the sun went down and it became too dark to see!
Maui and his brothers talked and grumbled about the sun/ Maui had an idea. He had his brothers cut flax and weave strong ropes out of it. They sang karakia – prayers that the ropes would be very strong. Then they started on a journey to where the sun lived.
They travelled by night and the light of Marama the moon, so that the sun did not see them. They were walking very fast and then sleeping during the day.
They got to the huge pit that the sun lived in and hid behind some rocks. As the sun came up, Maui yelled for his brothers to throw the ropes. They caught the sun and pulled and pulled. Maui ran up and started to hit the sun with his magic jaw bone.
The sun cried and moaned and asked him to stop. The sun promised to go slower across the sky.
When one group was finished acting and freeze framing, another group retold the story. They had a lot of helo and directions from their buddies in class. It was great fun!!
