Lily’s Mum, Mrs Horgan came in to school on Monday to tell us a tale from Tahiti.
This story told about how the coconut palm came to be. It was a tale of a beautiful, innocent girl who found she could not love the eel that loved her. He wanted Hina to kiss him – but she didn’t want to….
She ran to find help and Hiro (the hero) cut the eel into three pieces. He gave the head to Hina and told her not to put it down before she reached home. But Hina got sleepy and lay down for a nap. The eel head touched the ground and burrowed into the sand.
Up came a coconut tree in that place. Hina was getting very thirsty. She saw some round shapes on the tree. When one fell down, she picked it up and on shaking it heard the coconut water inside it. he saw three holes in one end and used them to make a way to the water. Now as she drank the water from the coconut it looked like she was kissing the eel!
Look carefully at a coconut in the supermarket and see the eyes and mouth of the eel on the end of the coconut!
