During weeks 2 to 6 of Term 3 the Harinui Syndicate are studying the Church Strand – belonging.
We are planning to have regular visits to the Church to become familiar with the objects we see there and how to behave correctly within the Church.
Our rubrics for the first 2 weeks have been:
*Be able to genuflect
*Name 3 Holy objects in the Church
*Act respectfully in Church
It was a bright sunny day as we walked to the Church together. Everyone walked sensibly and looked carefully around them.
As we went into the Church Mrs O’Grady showed us how to bless ourselves with the Holy Water.
We entered quietly and at the end of the pew we practised genuflecting. We remembered to face the correct way as we did it and then moved carefully to our seat.
Next we saw how we could sit nicely on our seats with our backs against the seat back and our feet and legs straight down. We were reminded not to put our shoes onto the kneelers while we were sitting.
Next we looked at some of the Holy objects inside the Church. We learned their names an some special things about them.
After that we learned how to kneel during a service. It is important to have a nice straight back and hold our hands still on the pew back in front of us. It is a time of prayerful stillness.
Our teachers were very proud of us as we behaved in a respectful and reverend way while we were in Church. We are getting ready to be able to celebrate the Eucharist together with others in an appropriate way. We are learning about our Church, the Holy objects in it and how people act while they are there worshipping God.
