On Tuesday and Wednesday the children in Room 2a were busy working at their independent mathematical activities when Mrs de Koning zoomed around the room taking photos. Everyone was focussed on their activities. Some people were working independently and some were working in small groups.
This group of students were putting tens frames in order from 0-10. Then they were matching numeral cards to each tens frame.
Some of the children could recognise the tens frame patterns immediately. Some of them counted each dot on the card to tally it. Then they ordered each one. Most of the children started with 0 and then they found 2 and then 3 and so on. See how clever they were!
Some children were ordering numeral cards and then matching number word cards together. 1 and one, 2 and two, 3 and three….and so on
They used a lot of their letter/sound knowledge to decide if ‘four’ or ‘five’ went with 4. They sounded out the word to see if ‘six’ or ‘seven’ went with 6. And if ‘two’ or ten’ went with 2. Some found ‘one’ and eight’ very tricky words to read!!
Mrs de Koning worked with different groups too! Here are the students learning to play Snakes and Ladders.
It is harder than you think! We had to take turns, we had to roll our dice sensibly and tally or recognise the dots. Then we had to remember which was our counter. It had to be moved the correct number of spaces and in the right direction too! We also had to check if we had landed on a snake or a ladder. Some of us forgot that we only go up ladders and down snakes…. Another thing we were learning was to be supportive of each other and patient as we all learned what to do. Sometimes it is hard to focus on a game when waiting for another turn – but we are getting better and better…. Mum and Dad, can we play this game together at home? We really enjoyed it!!
Another group was learning to add doubles of numbers: They joined these sets, 1+1=2, 2+2=4, 3+3=6, 4+4=8, 5+5=10. Each person made the two sets side by side and then counted them to find out how many they had joined together, They gained speed and accuracy as they practised making the sets, talked about what they were doing and watched how other people in their group made their sets and joined the, This was fun addition!
We really like our Mathematics lessons.
We are learning to-
- Count sets of objects to 10 and then 20
- Read numerals to 10 and then 20
- Make sets to 10 and then 20
- Join sets to 10 and then 20
- Separate sets from 10 and then 20
- Rote count to 10, then 20, then 50…and so on forwards
- Count backwards from 10 and then 20
Please help us practise these things at home too. We all want to be super Mathematicians!!!
