Room 13 students have been learning a bit about the renowned New Zealand author, Gavin Bishop. His Maori myths have captured our students imaginations and have had them critically thinking about their meanings. Come on in to Rm 13 and take a look at storyboards of some Maori myths.
For book week, we have been reading Katarina, and although this story is aimed at 8 year olds and up, we have thoroughly enjoyed the integration of Maori language in this story. Our main focus is on family and relationships of all characters. The story of Katarina has prompted us to think about the impact our tupuna have on us. This story is based on the real life of Katarina (Catherine) McKay, 1842-1935 and has special meaning for the author. Katarina was Gavin Bishop’s great-aunt and her brother Banjo was his grandfather.
Katarina is a story of love, hope and courage
