On Wednesday 25th March the whole of Holy Cross Catholic School attended the Duffy Role Model Assembly. Our visiting role model was Henry Tuipe’a. He arrived in the hall as we sang the song “I’m a Duffy kid and so proud of it!” Mrs Bucheler had taught the Room 2 students the words and actions and they led us from up on the stage.
Henry was so entertaining! We laughed and laughed. He told us about how important reading was to him personally. In fact Henry who graduated from the UNITEC School of Performing Arts, he auditioned successfully to act in “Duffy’s Big Day Out” show which toured schools in 2000! He played ‘Scruffy’ Duffy’s little brother.
Henry is now a radio DJ on Nui FM (103.8FM) and his nickname is ‘Jandals’…..
We were all very happy when Henry handed out the boxes of Duffy Books for us to take home. Everyone was lucky enough to have 2 books to keep for every and read often. Isn’t that great as the holidays are a great time to keep up our ‘Reading Mileage’ and develop our reading skills. It is important to focus on expression, fluency and using a balance of decoding information, such as meaning, sentence structure and visual cues (what does the word look like/start with and what can the illustrations tell me?)
The Duffy Song has such fun, inspiring words we love to sing it..

We had a lovely time – Mum and Dad and Caregivers – Have I shown you my new books yet? Have we read them together? Please ask me about them. I may need you to read my book to me!
