On Thursday 26th March Rooms 2 and 2a went for a visit to Papatoetoe New World. We lined up and walked sensibly along the footpath.
We looked around the store and listened carefully to Michael the Grocery Manager. He showed us the different areas of New World, and explained the things we saw displayed on the shelves.
We saw a lot of the staff busy doing their jobs, arranging produce, stocking shelves, helping customers who had questions and serving customers at counters and the check out!
We saw a lot of people doing their shopping at the store. We watched them look at the things on sale, choose their favourites and put them into their trolley or basket.
Next we saw them go to the checkout and have their choices scanned. After that they had Mrs de Koning’s least favourite thing to do in a store – yes, they had to pay for the items they wanted from the store!
The assistants at the checkout were friendly and helpful. They chatted with the customers and helped them if they had any queries.
We were invited to look out the back – at the loading/delivery bay and the storage area. Things come in great big boxes and have to be removed, taken into the store and displayed on the shelves as things are sold. We also saw the room where all the price tickets are printed. We were very lucky, not many people get to see behind the scenes!
One of the things we remember best about our visit is the yummy Easter Egg Michael kindly gave each of us! Mmmm…chocolate. Everyone said, “Thank you!” to him and we made sure to put the foil wrapping into the bin afterwards!
