On Thursday 5th March Rooms 2 and 2a went for a visit to Animates Manukau as part of their Language Experience philosophy and they included it in their research for the Unit Studies topic “Birds as Pets.”
The staff were very welcoming and we enjoyed several special activities.
Such soft fur!
We were gentle and quiet.
The puppies were so small and cute.
The puppies ran, and wrestled and played together in their play area,
It was very interesting to see the puppies spend time together.
One puppy was brown and the other was black.
When we first arrived we enjoyed watching two puppies having their exercise time in their play area. They were very young and ran around their area very excitedly.
This dog was very well behaved during his wash.
Owners can come and wash theri dogs at the back of the Animates store.
We watched a man wash his dog at the back of the store in a special washing room with a viewing window.
Rabbits are so soft.
This white rabbit is a good pet.
We all asked questions about rabbits.
Rabbits like quiet, gentle handling.
We learned rabbits love their vegies, carrots, broccoli, cabbage, lettuce and spinach.
Everyone wanted a turn at patting the rabbit.
We were able to stroke a lovely white rabbit and ask about the things rabbits like to eat.
We were able to look at this bird very closely!
This is a very young bird.
The children looked carefully inside the bird’s cage to see how a cockatiel lives.
The cage has newspaper lining the cage so it is easy to clean.
There are toys in the cage to play with so it is not bored.
Here is the seed to eat.
Clean water is very important for all animals.
Somewhere to perch is also necessary.
Birds like to use their feet and beaks to climb up and down their toys.
There were two cockatiels there, we got to see one outside the cage. Some people even got to balance the bird on their shoulder!
How much do I weigh?
It is important that dogs do not get too heavy!
Owners can weigh their dogs on special scales in the store.
Look at the numbers on the scales.
This is fun.
We were able to pretend we were big dogs and stand on the scales in the Animates store. We watched the digital numbers change as they registered our weight.
There were a lot of pet toys,
I can see many fish swimming in the tank.
This is a read eared turtle, he is good at swimming.
What can we see?
Everything you could want to put inside a fish tank was there.
Wow! What big bags of pet food.
We enjoyed browsing through the store adn talking aobut what we could see.
These pet rugs and mats are sooo soft.
There were artificial plants and also real plants for the bottom of fish aquariums.
The turtle going……
The turtle coming……
Round and round the store we walked looking but not touching! (Almost all the time!) Pets seem to need lots of fun things to play with, yummy things to eat and soft, cosy things to sleep on! Wow – just like kids do!!
Puppies sat waiting to be chosen to live with a kind family.
This puppy wonders what the children think of him.
The cats climbed, chased and jumped inside their space.
Look at this playground for cats. It keeps them happy and well exercised.
Have you heard of Sot the dog? Well, here is Spot the cat!
I can see food and water for the kittens to drink and eat.
I love cats!
The glass fronted spaces where the cats and dogs were kept were so clean and tidy. The animals had a cosy place to sleep, food, water, toys and lots of love from the store employees. Oh and us too….
Tiny mice lived in little houses.
Most mice were sleeping. We quietly watched them.
Mice are twice as nice! Do you like the rhymes?
Best of all we got to see Mrs O’Grady’s dog Harlequin. He is black and white and loves children to pat him!
Mum and Dad ask us some questions about our fun time at Animates. We can tell you all about it!
