Term 1 February 2015
GREETINGS TO ALL PARENTS, GRANDPARENTS AND CAREGIVERS
A Happy New Year to you all and welcome to the first term in 2015. We hope that you have enjoyed the long summer break and are refreshed and ready for another year.
We welcome all the new students. Mr Shaun Ginders joins our team this year and is teaching in Room 21 and Mrs Sarda Pancha returns in Room 20. These classrooms are situated on the second floor of the Mercy block.
As part of our Science unit, ‘The Estuary’, we will be visiting the Tamaki River estuary at Seaside Park and Tahuna Torea. This trip was scheduled for Wednesday 11th February but will now take place on Tuesday 17th February.
We have also been chosen by KidsCan to go on a bonus free trip to Rangitoto Island supervised by the Department of Conservation (DOC). This will be a great experience and fits in with our Estuary unit as well as our volcano unit in Term 4. We are waiting to hear of confirmation of a date in March.
We are also looking to have a quick visit to Whaiora Marae to view its amazing wharenui as part of our Whakapapa unit. This is still to be confirmed.
We will need parent helpers for the Science, so please keep these dates in mind.

This is an extension of the school day and all children will be expected to complete reading, spelling, basic facts and specific activities each night as directed by their class teacher. Please ensure all tasks are attempted and all books and work are returned to school each day as they are needed for class lessons. These should be carried in the book bags that the children will receive as part of their stationery. With the increasing use of ICT in the classroom some homework may be required to be done online. If your child does not have access they may be able to get some time before school. Contact your child’s teacher on when would be a suitable day and time.
The summer uniform needs to be worn by all students. This includes a Holy Cross School hat which must be worn during Morning Tea and Lunch breaks. Footwear should be black roman sandals except for Year 6 boys who have the option of wearing school shoes and socks. Please ensure your child is wearing the correct uniform and has their P.E. uniform at school everyday (it is recommended that children have at least 2 pairs of P.E. uniforms). Children need plain black shorts (no stripes or monograms). Remember we do not allow any nail polish or jewellery apart from a pair of stud earrings and a watch. Hair should be tied up in the school colours.
Could you also please check to see that all clothing and footwear is clearly named as this enables us to return any articles of clothing that may be misplaced. All children must bring a note if they are not wearing the correct uniform.
In a new initiative to encourage student voice and improve the experience of responsibility, we will have a syndicate reporting team to share news and work from our wonderfully talented students. Stay tuned!
Please ensure that your child has a healthy balanced lunch. No other drink (sports water included) is allowed apart from plain water.
AFTER SCHOOL SPORT
Mr ‘Ofamo’oni is running Rippa Rugby on Thursdays after school from 3-4pm starting from Thursday 12th February- Thursday 19th March. Only selected children will be involved.
Auckland Cricket is running a cricket competition on Tuesdays starting on 9th February. It is 8 a-side although a squad of 11 has been selected to cover unavailability.
Thank you for your continual support. We are looking forward to working with your children and their families throughout this term. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any queries or concerns.
Kindest Regards and God’s Blessings,
